SMEG KLF03WHUS Kettle Review: Years of Daily Use, One Persistent Flaw

Most of our reviews are built from specs, manufacturer info, and owner feedback. This one is different — the SMEG KLF03WHUS is my own kettle, the white 1.7-litre one in the photo. It’s my daily driver. Every morning I take it, boil water, and while it’s heating I’m browsing the tea cabinet deciding what I feel like — a Chinese tea, an herbal tea, something I brought back from France. Usually it’s a black tea, no sugar, no milk, nothing added. I just boil, pour, wait for it to cool, and drink. No thermometer, no fuss. That’s the SMEG’s job in my kitchen: the quick cup. (The Bidim handles the herbal remedies — that’s a different review.) What follows is what years of actual daily use taught me.

★★★☆☆ 3.5/5

The SMEG KLF03WHUS has been my daily kettle for years: fast, beautiful, and utterly dependable — with one persistent flaw, a plasticky lid smell that never fully went away. I gave it 3.5 for that smell, and yet I use it every single day. That contradiction tells you everything about how well the rest of it works.

Design and build quality

The KLF03WHUS is SMEG’s 50’s Retro Style kettle in glossy white — powder-coated stainless steel with a chromed handle and base, and that unmistakable rounded silhouette. It’s a countertop statement piece; people comment on it when they come over. For me, though, what matters more than the looks is that it has survived years of daily use without a single functional issue. The finish still looks good, the lever action is positive, the 360-degree swivel base still seats cleanly every time. It feels solid at about 4 lbs, with anti-slip feet and a cord wrap under the base that keeps the counter tidy. For my money, reliability beats everything — and this has been reliable.

Everyday performance

It’s a 1500W, 1.7-litre (7-cup) kettle, and it boils fast — a full pot takes just a few minutes. That speed matters to me more than any feature list: I don’t want to stand around waiting, and I definitely don’t want to walk away and forget about it (I’ve done that with slower kettles). The soft-opening lid is genuinely nice — press the button and it opens gently instead of springing up in a cloud of steam. The water-level indicator is easy to read, the stainless limescale filter pops out for cleaning, and automatic shut-off plus boil-dry protection mean I’ve never worried about leaving it. The spout pours cleanly without dribbling — though as a regular spout, not a gooseneck, it’s not built for pour-over precision. I don’t need precision; I need hot water, fast, every morning.

The flaw: the lid smell

Here’s the honest part, and the reason for the 3.5. Since day one, the lid has given off a plasticky smell when opened — most noticeable when you lift it right after boiling. I expected it to fade. Years later, it hasn’t, quite. It’s the steam and the lid area rather than the water itself — my tea tastes fine — but if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing, it’s the one real mark against an otherwise excellent kettle. I’ll be straight with you: it bothers me enough to cost it a full point and a half, and not enough to make me replace the kettle. Make of that what you will.

Who should buy it

If you want a beautiful, fast, dependable everyday kettle for tea, coffee, and general hot water — one you’ll use for years without thinking about it — the KLF03WHUS is easy to recommend. If you need precise pour control for pour-over coffee, get a gooseneck instead. If you brew like I do — boil, pour, wait for it to cool — it’s perfect. And if plastic smells bother you, know about the lid going in.

What we like

  • Years of daily use with zero functional issues — reliability is what I care about most
  • Fast boiling (1500W, 1.7L) — hot water when I want it, no waiting around
  • Gorgeous retro design that holds up
  • Soft-opening lid, 360-degree swivel base, auto shut-off
  • Removable limescale filter and clear water gauge

What we don’t like

  • Persistent plastic smell from the lid, even after years — the reason for 3.5/5
  • No temperature control (I don’t miss it — I just boil and wait)
  • Not a gooseneck — not for pour-over precision
  • Premium price (around $230)
  • Hand wash recommended
